Editing content
Mabel edits the Markdown files in your repository. Each save is a commit, so nothing lives in Mabel that is not also in your repo.
Find your content
Open a site and choose Content. Switch between Posts, Pages and Data files (see Data files). In the list you can:
- Filter by All, Published or Drafts.
- Filter by tag, and search.
- Sort the list.
Write a post or page
Choose New or open an existing file. The editor has:
- The title as the page heading, and a slug that becomes the filename. The slug is locked once the file exists.
- A Markdown editor with Write and Preview tabs and a toolbar. The footer shows a word count and reading time.
- A front matter panel on the right with a control for each field.
Posts are saved as _posts/YYYY-MM-DD-slug.md. Pages are saved in the repository root as slug.md.
Front matter
The panel shows the fields Jekyll sites commonly use.
| Posts | Pages |
|---|---|
| Title, date, excerpt, cover image, category, tags, layout, status | Title, layout, permalink |
Each field uses a suitable control: text boxes, a date and time picker, tag chips, a dropdown for layout and a cover image picker. Typing in a tags field suggests tags already used on your site. The layout dropdown lists the layouts that actually exist in your _layouts folder.
Keys Mabel does not recognise are written back untouched. If your posts carry custom front matter, such as series or toc, editing a post in Mabel will not remove or reorder them.
Drafts and publishing
The Status control switches a post between Draft and Live. For Jekyll it sets published: false for a draft and published: true when live. You can save either way with the two save buttons. Drafts are committed to the repository like any other file, and Jekyll skips them on build.
Images
Drop an image into the editor, paste it, or use the toolbar button. Mabel:
- Converts it to WebP at quality 82 (SVG images are left as they are). Large images are scaled down so the longest side is at most 2000 pixels.
- Commits it to your repository, under
assets/images/<year>/. - Inserts a normal Jekyll path such as
into your Markdown.
The original file is not kept. Your Git history is the record.
The Media section lists every image, lets you upload more and delete ones you no longer need, and works as a picker for cover images.
Where saves go
Every save is committed directly to the site’s branch. There is no draft or pull request step. Choose the branch in your site’s settings. If your site builds from a branch other than the default, set it there so edits end up in the right place.
Editing needs the Admin or Owner role. Members can view content. See Team and access.
